Why do we have three different accounts?
The CS department uses a computing environment that is tailored to fit the curriculum and research needs of the department's faculty and students; but it largely incompatible with the Windows-centric computing environment provided by the campus' IT services. Additionally, the CS department is partnered with Google's Apps for Education program which provides email service to our faculty and students. This Apps Gmail service is slightly different than the "normal" Gmail accounts, as there are no advertisements. The Gmail Apps email also allows us to send program code file between each other, which is precluded by the campus mail system. For these reasons, as a student at Shippensburg University and in the Computer Science department, you will have three accounts:
- "ship.edu" account - access Outlook email and campus labs that are not MCT162, 164, or 165
- "cs.ship.edu" account - access computers in CS department's labs, and our general purpose servers and websites
- "cs.ship.edu" gmail account - access to Google's apps for education service.
Your user id, usually made of your initials and four random digits, is assigned by the central IT services. Your user id kept the same between the three different types of accounts. For example, your campus user id may be: aa1111. Your password for the "cs.ship.edu" services are unlinked by design. By keeping them unlinked, when your relationship ceases with the Computer Science department, you may continue to use your "cs.ship.edu" gmail account (so long as Google provides the service to us).
